The Salmon River is completely free-flowing, meaning its levels are controlled only by nature, not by dams. As snow accumulates in the mountains throughout the winter, it acts as a natural reservoir. When temperatures rise in the spring, the river surges with snowmelt, creating massive high-water conditions.
🌊 Peak Flow & Record Highs:
The Salmon River peaks in May to early June each year.
40,000 to 60,000 CFS (Cubic Feet per Second) is not uncommon during peak runoff.
Record peak flows have exceeded 130,000 CFS in 1974!
In some sections, the river level can rise or drop by as much as 50 feet within just a few weeks.
Each year, snowmelt quickly recedes, and river levels stabilize by mid to late June, offering ideal summer rafting conditions.

The Snake River spans over 1,000 miles and is controlled by dozens of dams and reservoirs, allowing for human regulation of river levels. Because of this, flows vary significantly depending on the section of the river and the time of year.

Murtaugh Section – Extreme Variability & High-Flow Thrills
The Murtaugh section is one of the most variable stretches of river in Idaho.
Most of the year, this section is completely dry, as the water is diverted for agriculture, fueling the irrigation systems that transformed the Magic Valley into productive farmland.
Spring runoff (March–June) can bring flows of 2,500 to 8,000 CFS, making for a big-water adventure.
In heavy snowpack years, when reservoirs are full, flows can surge to 15,000–20,000 CFS.
Most recent high: In 1997, the Murtaugh peaked at 37,000 CFS—a legendary flow that only a few of our team members have experienced firsthand.

Riggins was founded as a mining and ranching town in the late 1800s, originally called Gouge Eye (after a notorious bar fight). The town was later renamed Riggins after John Riggins, an early settler.
By the 1900s, Riggins became a hub for logging, hunting, and fishing.
Today, it is known as the Whitewater Capital of Idaho, attracting rafters, anglers, and adventure seekers year-round.
The Salmon River has been home to indigenous people for thousands of years, including the Nez Perce Tribe, who relied on the river for salmon fishing and trade.
In the early 1800s, fur trappers and explorers like Lewis and Clark passed through the region.
By the 1860s, gold miners and settlers came searching for fortune, leading to boomtowns along the river.
Today, the Salmon River is known as “The River of No Return” because early settlers found its powerful current nearly impossible to navigate upstream.
