Short answer: Yes… if you want to have a good time!
Long answer: It depends.
✅ If you’re in a gear boat – No paddling required! Our guides can navigate heavy gear boats solo, using extreme skill and the boat’s weight to carry momentum down the river. If you want to sit back and relax, this is your best option.
✅ If you’re in a paddle boat – Yes, you need to paddle! Paddling is the #1 most effective way to stay in the boat and keep the raft upright. It’s also how you get to punch through big waves instead of going around them.
🤔 What if my group doesn’t want to paddle?
That’s fine—but the guide will have to take more mellow routes, avoiding big waves. If you want to blast through rapids, launch over waves, and take the most exciting lines down the river, then you need to paddle hard as a team!
🚣♂️ Bottom line: Paddle = More fun. No paddle = More relaxing. Your choice!
✅ Yes, but not all the time! Always ask your guide before jumping out of the boat.
🌊 There are calm sections where it’s refreshing and fun to swim alongside the boat. However, some areas have strong currents, shallow rocks, or upcoming rapids, so your guide will let you know when it’s safe to swim.
Pro Tip: If you do swim, stay close to the boat and be ready to hop back in when needed!
☀️🔥We see way too many bad sunburns! Here’s how to protect yourself and stay comfortable:
✅ Apply sunscreen multiple times a day – Once is NOT enough!
✅ Remember the reflection! Sun bounces off the water, nearly doubling UV exposure—even reaching under your nose, ears, and chin.
✅ Don’t forget your legs and feet! We see tons of burns on inner thighs and feet from wearing sandals. Cover up or reapply!
✅ On multi-day trips, a bad burn can make you miserable for days. Be proactive!
Best Sun Protection Gear:
Waterproof sunscreen (SPF 30+), reapplied often
Lightweight, long-sleeve sun shirts
A good sun hat & sunglasses
Buff or bandana for neck protection
Stay covered, stay cool, and don’t let a sunburn ruin your adventure! 😎🌊
Bathrooms are a common pre-trip concern, but most guests find it’s not an issue!
Day Trips: Restrooms are often available at the start and end of the trip.
Multi-Day Trips: We use a private and sanitary wilderness toilet system that is easy to use and ensures comfort and privacy.
No problem! Our trips include oar boats where guides do the rowing, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery.

✅ Yes! Many of our trips offer fantastic fishing opportunities. Just bring your gear and a valid fishing license. 🎣
🚤 Want a better fishing setup? You can request a separate dedicated fishing boat for a more focused fishing experience.
🚫 Fishing is NOT allowed:
• During high water season (typically May–early June)
• On the Murtaugh section of the Snake River - Always ready to paddle!
🕶️ Safety Note: Everyone must wear sunglasses while fishing from a raft to protect against stray hooks.
For the best experience, ask your guide about prime fishing spots!

🌊 It depends on the season! The Salmon River and Snake River change dramatically throughout the year based on snowmelt and air temperatures.
❄️ Spring (May–Early June):
Cold! Water temperatures range from 40–55°F due to snowmelt.
Wetsuits and splash jackets are provided during high-water season to keep you comfortable.
Remember to bring wool/fleece layers and rain gear for added warmth.
☀️ Summer (Mid-June–August):
Perfect for swimming! Water warms up to 70–75°F by mid-July
Air temps often exceed 95°F.
By late summer, the river feels refreshing but comfortable—ideal for a cool-down on hot days!
Remember to bring wool/fleece layers and rain gear just in case of cooler/wet weather.
🍂 Fall (September–October):
Water begins to cool down again, typically dropping to 60°F or below as temperatures decrease.
Pro Tip: If you’re rafting in spring or fall, wearing neoprene socks and layers helps keep you warm. In summer, you’ll be glad to get splashed! 🌊☀️
