Kayak Instruction Trips
Adventure Idaho Rafting x Rapid Progression Kayak School
These trips are designed for people who want more than just floating downstream.
Adventure Idaho has long been known for strong guide training and safety culture. Many of our guides are experienced whitewater kayakers, including guides who have competed, instructed, and spent years paddling Idaho’s hardest rivers.
To take that a step further, we’ve partnered with Rapid Progression Kayak School to offer trips that combine real wilderness rafting with professional kayak instruction.
This is not a pool session or roadside eddy hopping. This is learning and progressing on real rivers, in real whitewater, with experienced instructors and a full expedition support team.
What Makes These Trips Different
Professional Instruction
Rapid Progression Kayak School brings focused, step-by-step coaching designed to accelerate learning. Instruction is intentional, progressive, and built around real river scenarios.
Experienced River Team
You are not learning in isolation. You are supported by Adventure Idaho guides who run multi-day wilderness trips for thousands of guests every year and understand river logistics, safety, and decision-making at a high level.
Real Rivers, Real Context
You learn while moving through canyon country, running rapids, scouting lines, setting safety, and camping on the river. This is how kayaking actually happens.

FAQ
Do you provide hard-shell kayaks?
No. We do not provide hard-shell kayaks as part of our standard instruction or rental offerings.
However, experienced paddlers are welcome to bring their own hard-shell kayaks, especially if they already have instruction lined up or are part of a coached group. If you’re considering this, let us know in advance so we can confirm logistics and safety planning.
What’s the difference between hard-shell and inflatable kayaks?
Both are a blast, and both have a place on the river.
Inflatable kayaks (duckies):
-
More forgiving and beginner-friendly
-
Easier to get back into if you flip or fall out
-
Great for learning fundamentals and building confidence
-
Ideal for multi-day trips and mixed-experience groups
If you swim, you simply climb back in and keep going.
Hard-shell kayaks:
-
Higher performance and more precise control
-
Capable of handling more technical and difficult rapids
-
You are locked into the boat and must roll or actively exit
-
Once exited, the kayak fills with water, making rescues more complex
Hard-shell kayaking is very rewarding but requires stronger skills and experience.
Is kayak instruction available on other dates?
Yes. While we highlight specific partnership trips, kayak instruction may be available on other dates depending on river conditions, group size, and instructor availability.
What rivers can kayak instruction be offered on?
Instruction may be available on:
-
Lower Salmon River
-
Main Salmon River
-
Riggins-area day trips
-
Riggins-area multi-day trips
-
Hagerman (Snake River)
