Row Your Own (RYO)
Supported Private Boater Trips
Experience the freedom of rowing your own raft down Idaho’s legendary rivers — with the safety, support, and logistics of a professional outfitter.
Adventure Idaho offers Row Your Own (RYO) options on both the Main Salmon and Lower Salmon, perfect for experienced private boaters who want to enjoy Idaho’s wilderness without the permit hassle.
Our Guides Love Having RYOs Join Us
Our guides enjoy having Row-Your-Owns (RYOs) join select trips! It’s a fun way to blend private boater independence with the expertise of a professional guide team.
However, this option isn’t open to everyone — we may decline requests based on experience, qualifications, or group size to ensure the safety and quality of the trip for all.
How Our Trips Move
Adventure Idaho trips run at a fast, efficient pace to make the most of each day on the river.
While rowing, our guides typically push (downstream ferry) rather than pull for navigation. This keeps the group moving smoothly and allows more time for hot springs, scenic stops, and side hikes.
In the past, we’ve had issues with private boaters unable to keep up — which affects the overall quality of the trip. We want to make sure every participant can row confidently and maintain the group pace.
Which Trips Are Open to RYOs?
All of them! But our best RYO windows are typically mid-August through September, when school’s back in session and the crowds thin out — creating a relaxed, private-boater feel.

Can I Carry Passengers?
No. Only guides licensed by the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association (IOGA) may legally carry passengers on commercial trips.
Can I Leave Camp Early or Go at My Own Pace?
No. RYO participants must stay with the group for safety, camp coordination, and compliance with commercial permit rules.
Safety & Skill Requirements
RYO participants should be confident rowing Class III–IV whitewater, self-rescuing, and keeping pace with a professional guide team.
All RYO guests must meet our Essential Physical Requirements and follow guide instructions at all times.
